Specifically, I have this in /boot/loader.conf:

cpu_microcode_load="YES"
cpu_microcode_name="/boot/firmware/intel-ucode.bin"

> or from a rc.d service.

Updating the CPU microcode _after_ the kernel has started seems
questionable.
