I collected the following links, also those just mentioned from vermaden@ https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/book/#pkgbase https://github.com/FreeBSDFoundation/pkgbasify https://wiki.freebsd.org/action/show/pkgbase > On documentation in general, I am perhaps a weirdo about this, > but many times I can't quite wrap my head around something until I > have the "why" of it - then things generally fall into place really > quickly for me... From what I've learned, initial installation of 'base' from packages is roughly the same as before, but *updates* are easier to handle. If you look at the freebsd-update script, the run time to find which files need to be updated etc was always resource-intensive. With a base system seperated in packages, the code from pkg which allows to decide which pkg to update can be used. I have no insight in the backend of freebsd-update, maybe Colin can describe the pros and cons from that side ? -- [email protected] +49 171 3101372 Now what ?
