just a question about Descent:
does it run without UMBPCI? (clean boot, F5)
if it runs without UMBPCI, then it is most likely a DMA problem with
UMBPCI.

does it run if you replace the DOS4GW.EXE that comes with Descent by one of
* Causeway cwstub.exe (www.devoresoftware.com)
* DOS32/A dos32a.exe (dos32a.sourceforge.net)
simply
copy cwstub.exe c:\descent\dos4gw.exe
or something like that and see?
