I was confronted with a client's Dell which had xp crashed with the 
NTFS; I could read the drive with a floppy dos boot, and found her 
personal desktop, and could copy.... to where? I couldnt crack the case 
and void the warrenty, zip disk and cdrom burners expect to be mounted 
on a hard drive; Ikept getting gotchas trying to setup from floppy.

I put what I could on some floppies. Reformated the Dell with fat32, and 
left a 1.2 gig dos partition on the 20gig hd. When it crashed again, and 
we all know it would, it was duck soup to copy the personals to the dos 
partition and burn cd tracks. Then re-install xp, and as it turned out, 
the user could access the dos partition from xp.

I imagine the same thing would work for linux. IIRC, os2 also supports 
NTFS with HPFS. I only recently found os2 at ebay for 20$, (manual warp 
4, two CDs) and have found it an interesting compromise between the 
bloatware gui and the clarity of dos.
