Hi, on your problem - non-working WinXP with NTFS, trying to copy data...
- there is a NTFS driver for DOS (no NTFS5, I think!)
- there is CD-burning software for DOS
- at least old ZIP drives could be easily used with DOS: They came with
  a driver that you could simply load at the prompt.
- this software should work from A: just as well as from C: !?

You can try Knoppix Linux (google for it...): A single bootable CD packed
with lots of Linux goodies (including good Office software and rescuing
tools) that directly runs from CD. No harddisk install needed. Should be
able to mount NTFS disks, too. At least fat32 is easy for every Linux.
Or try one of those "rescue system" Linuxes, on a floppy or CD.

Why was it so obvious that XP would crash again? It is a cousin of WinNT
and Win2000 and supposed to crash less often than Win95 Win98 or WinME.
Microsoft even told me on the radio that XP would never crash not get
infected by viruses :-)). However, I get really enough questions from people
that got a virus on WinXP and now need to know how to disable the system
file protection to be able to REMOVE the virus with their virus scanner...

Normally, NTFS and NTFS5 are too different to call them both the same.
I am not sure which operating systems can handle NTFS5 (apart from Win2000
and WinXP), and I know that Linux was limited to read-only when mounting
normal NTFS for quite a while.
