Cutemouse Help

CuteMouse is behaving strangely on my IBM Thinkpad 570E.  Because I 
can't get access to the mouse through the W2K DOS utility, I have booted 
up the computer with a DOS floppy, then ran ctmouse, then ran my 
program.  Last night, everything worked just fine.  But today, when I 
run ctmouse, the computer keeps hanging up.  I get the following message:

CuteMouse v2.0 alpha 2 [Free DOS]
-

and then nothing happens.  The computer will not accept input from 
keyboard or mouse.  After I press keys for a while, with no effect at 
all, the computer then starts making a beep every time I press a key - 
but does nothing else.

What happened?
