Hi, the "FreeDOS emm386 cannot be used with FDXMS" problem should be
fixed in current versions - probably it is only the documentation that
is outdated.
The issue is based on general problems of emm386 with protected mode
interaction (by the way, FreeDOS emm386 lacks VCPI support, so you
cannot run protected mode software after loading FreeDOS emm386). A few
changes in FDxXMS / FDXMS made it behave nice enough (in protected mode
terms) to be FreeDOS emm386 compatible, as far as I remember.
Alternatively, use Tom (maintainer of FreeDOS emm386) -s own version
of HIMEM instead of FDXMS: It can do less things, but it is even SoftICE
compatible.
Or you can use DR emm386 (free for noncommxercial use) which offers
UMB (umbpci/fdxxms/himem), EMS (emm386 by MS/DR/FreeDOS), VCPI (most
emm386 have this), DPMI (cwsdpmi), multitasking (!?) and other cool
things all in one driver (including an XMS driver, of course, so you
do not need to use fdxxms/himem with it).
