Usually one rather makes gnumach gdb-aware, by adding a gdbserver, so
gdb can inspect it at will.

Note that qemu can do that for you, see the "GDB in QEMU" section of 
microkernel/mach/gnumach/debugging on the wiki.

On servers, often, otherwise it's USB dongles.

For debugging kernels one usually uses virtual machines anyway.
