If envstat shows you the information you want, you could either use it
or write your own program that reads from the same underlying
mechanisms.  (I did the latter with my own laptop.)  Since you say
acpibat reports presence at autoconfig time, I suspect envstat may well
work for you.

You also don't say what NetBSD version(s) you're running, and that may
matter for at least some possible answers.
