Does it attach before the kernel starts init ?
This was changed at some point to hold the kernel boot, because otherwise
on some hardware ipmi0 would show up too late

BTW ipmi0 still attaches at mainbus0:
ipmi0 at mainbus0
ipmi0: version 2.0 interface KCS iobase 0xca8/0x8 spacing 4
