working around failed console firmware load

Can I tell the kernel not to try to load DRM firmware (for the console)?

During switching from 8.2 to 10 back to 8.2 (see RAIDframe panic) I lost
(well: moved somewhere else) /libdata/firmware which resulted in

drm: Loading R5780 Microcode
drm kern error: r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RS780_pfp.bin"
DRM error in r600_init: Failed to load firmware!
radeon0: error: Fatal error during GPU init
radeon0: unable to attach drm: 2
panic: cnopen: no console device

Luckily, I had an older kernel around that didn't try to load that firmware.

Or can I tell the kernel the firmware is in /somewhere/else/firmware (on
the root FS)?
