Yes, we would version it.  The current implementation (both 32- and 
64-bit) has version==2, we'd bump it to version==3 if we made 
incompatible changes.  The main question in my mind is which of the two 
approaches to take (or some other approach!), and of course I'd like to 
hear from some of the other developers that have looked intensively at 
the code more recently than I have.
