I dimly recall both a backtrace with openat() (but that may have been on 
-8) as well as a "no console" message.

Hard to tell without a working console. I only had 24 lines and trying to 
scroll up resulted in a page fault in ddb.

But as the machine boots with -c and disable radeon*, couldn't the kernel 
do something similar when the GPU firmware is missing?
