I am still working on this.  I can reliable get to the kernel's main.  It stops
in x86_autoconf.c in findroot around like 370 right after a call to
lookup_bootinfo(BTINFO_NETIF).  There is no console output, but it would say

  findroot: netboot interface not found.

I can netboot if the USB install media is installed.  The interface is re0.
