So far as I can tell nobody has even remotely hinted that such a feature
should be enabled by default.

I wouldn't mind just having to compile a new kernel to enable it (just
as one has to do so to change the wscons colours).  I see no strong
reason to add a boot option.  There are probably many other things that
could be boot options that would be much higher priority.
