Yes, it's annoying. Apparently it's a problem on other BSDs as well.
I've tried to find where it was hanging by adding printfs in the code
but it wasn't immediately clear to me. I couldn't use gdb because it
currently doesn't work with threaded programs on current/amd64. I'm
planning to look into it again.

A workaround is to disable the splash screen under
settings/look/startup.
