extraction peculiarity for megaglest

I've started packaging MegaGlest and have encountered a very odd problem. Extraction phase fails, but if I descend to the work directory I can manually untar the archive just fine. Then, adding a no-op do-extract target to the Makefile, I can continue building the package.

It's just a standard tarball, which mk/extract/extract should be able to handle. Can someone with better knowledge of the toolchain give any insights?
