Seems more an issue with the installed compiler.
Is it tested? Is it the default compiler on your OS?
My netbsd i386 5.0-beta has 
/usr/bin/gcc -v
gcc version 4.1.3 20080704 prerelease (NetBSD nb2 20081120)
