I think the developers have only tried it on a limited number of platforms, so those are the only ones that they have supplied their set of custom vars/flags for.  Systems similar to the ones they've tried might be able to use one of those var/flag sets-in fact, that's what they suggest doing when attempting to build on unsupported systems.  (That's how I got NetBSD/i386 to build.)  Like I mentioned, I could try mapping systems to configs, based on endianness and other factors, to try to cover more architectures, but obviously there are no guarantees.
