Trying to be overly clever, I guess...

That was the magic I was looking for!  But after I changed it to CFLAGS, it worked anyway.  I thought I'd misunderstood how variables get passed to/picked from the environment, or something, but I guess I was just setting the wrong var.

This now works on NB/i386, and still works on Sol9/sparc too.  Committed!
