This is in every Makefile, via an included file:

LDFLAGS	= $(OPTIM)  -L/usr/X11R7/lib -R/usr/X11R7/lib -L/usr/pkg/lib -Wl,-R/usr/pkg/lib -L/usr/X11R7/lib -Wl,-R/usr/X11R7/lib -L/usr/lib -Wl,-R/usr/lib

With /usr/pkg/lib in there, shouldn't the png libs be found?  I don't claim to be an expert on linking.
