So, some more rather odd results that I can't explain:

    - on NetBSD, both older versions, and with yesterday's -current
      (which includes Roland's make patch), I get left-over intermediate
      files, but never any empty object files.

    - with Roland's patch on macOS (i.e. in nbmake) I no longer get any
      left-over intermediate files!

    - however with Roland's patch on macOS I have had a new build
      failure where there's an empty .o file (and a left-over .o.o)!
