I mean, I also find =E2=80=9Ccompiler people=E2=80=9D annoying in this regar=
d, but this doesn=E2=80=99t render the compiler =E2=80=9Cunsuitable=E2=80=9D=
.  Just fix the code and be done with it.  I do wish the compiler at least e=
mitted a warning, however, when a NULL-check is elided for this reason.=
