Folks, I appreciate that tar and path encodings are exciting, but this
discussion risks spiralling out of control with speculation and
philosophizing about Unix principles, which is not helpful for solving
the specific problem at hand.

If you have input about it, please make sure to keep it grounded in
specific references to:

- the applicable written standards,
- the relevant source code, and/or
- the input data that we have no control over.
