i've seen xdpyinfo do this. it also can use a LOT of memory on some systems. more than they have available. my shark is currently PSU-less, but it used to fail to run at all, using all 128MB of swap + what ever 64MB of ram had left over. i never figured out what was happening though. be great if someone did :) .mrg.
