Wondering if there are multiple DACs and your system is defaulting
to the "wrong" one?  Might try using aiomixer(1) to switch DACs
then re-check audioctl(1)/mixctl(1) outputs.  I had to change the
default DAC on one of my laptops for similar reasons.
