compact flash boot media

hello list,

I've recently purchased a thin client including a CF Card to boot.
Currently it boots into eLux, some sort of embedded Linux.

My question: Can I simply newfs, disklabel and bootstrap the Compact
Flash card like a normal Hard-drive and am I going to be able to boot
from it ?
