"unknown host cu9600" error message

I'm trying to configure ppp using an external modem on NetBSD 4 RC5. 
When I use the 'tail -f /var/log/messages' command to monitor the process

When I use the 'cu -p' to see the connect process, it ends with the 
following:

chat[146]: alarm
chat[146]: Failed
pppd[1008]: connect script failed
pppd[1008]: Exit

When I use the 'cu -p modem' command it ends with a 'cu:unknown host 
cu9600' message.

Google is no help with this.
