It should be.  I would recommend using a wscons kernel (e.g. the NC_WSCONS
kernel shipped with 1.6) though.  I haven't put any effort into making the
old console work with the ARM7500(FE).  Unfortunately, wscons doesn't
currently support changing screen mode on the fly, so you at least need to
ensure that the kernel has support for the right mode compiled in and that
RISC OS is in approximately the mode you want before booting.
