I also tried plugging in a CF-IDE adapter directly in to the port, but that didn't help, either. I didn't get the long pauses while the kernel retries, but while I do get a detection, during boot (with weird geometry), the installer refuses to see the disk. I picked up an LSI 53c876 dual-port PCI-X SCSI HBA, from my house, to try that this evening. I know that the '876 isn't directly supported, but figured that it was worth a shot. I also grabbed an Adaptec 2940UW.
