I may well be wrong, but ... I suspect the pkgin error is actually the result of an incomplete package database bz2 file on the server. I suggest you download the pkg_summary.bz2 manually from the server and check its integrity. Or even just click around the repo and compare the size of pkg_summary.bz2 for a few different architectures -- you may find yours is far too small to be realistic. I had this problem when trying to update the ARM port on an RPi.
