If you can get Digital unix or tru64 running, IT can provide detailed Info if memory fails.
Simm are troublesome on the whole 3000 series

My 3000/300 runs NetBSD/alpha 9.2 fine:

In my experience, there were several trouble around SIMM and CPU modules

and I had to remove/reinstall them to pass firmware checks.

(though IIRC there was no machine check on NetBSD kernel)
