It is derived from what is mounted as the root filesystem (which can
be completely unrelated to the location from which the kernel was
booted :)

It's definitely quite helpful when adding disks or moving disks
between machines. For systems using GPT partitioning you can use named
wedges with
NAME=myroot /               ffs     rw,log 1 1
but you would have to be really quite perverse to setup a NetBSD/amiga
system like that (and also likely need to wire in some more MI code
into sys/arch/amiga :)
