Thanks!  For now I'm going to assume that the super block issue was an 
artifact of my wacky HEAD / 1.6.1 combo install.  If I see it again though 
I'll try this out.

You should be able to run "newfs -N" on the file system.  That should
print out the fs metadata without really doing anything to the disk.
Note that usually block #32 is the first alternate superblock.
