X11: changing keyboard leyout

Hi,

i am stuck changing the keyboard layout in X.

On the console, i got it right (loadkmap).

i edited /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config to have

# XkbDisable (not disabled)

because else i get "XKB extension not present on :0" error message
when running setxkmap

Now i always get "Couldn't interpret _XKB_RULES_NAMES property",
no matter what keyb model or layout i choose.


I admit that running X11R6 binarys with X11R7 installation
is most probably calling for such problems.

Anyway, someone have an idea how to make it:

model "ataritt"
layout "de"

That would be great.
