If the problem is capacity of 12V power line, larger power supply
won't have the problem. If it's caused by shortage of 12V-to-5V
regulator on the motherboard, replacing adapter won't help so much.
(anyway I should replace my IDE drive with less power one ;-)

I think CF would be probed as standard IDE drives, but
I'm not sure if the firmware will recognize it properly.

For a quick test, you might be able to put your CF as primary slave
on cable of your working (master) IDE disk.
