Space required to compile kernel?

How much space is required to recompile

a) just the kernel?

b) complete OS install?

I'm wondering if I can do this on my Cobalt Qube 2700 with a 2GB disk or
if I should find something a little bigger. Right now I'm only
interested in reconfiguring a kernel.
