I tried

1.

cat <<EOT >/etc/myname
wimp.snert.com
EOT

rebooted... No change to paneld, login prompt, or hostname(1)

2.

cat <<EOT >>/etc/rc.conf
hostname='wimp.snert.com'
EOT

rebooted... No change to paneld, login prompt, or hostname(1)
