They work with 256Mb. I'd put it down to one of two things: 1) Dodgey RAM. 2) Caps on your board that are old and not able to keep the additional ram powered. You can test both by swapping the new ram for the old and see if 128mb comes up. If not, return to sender. Else, replace capacitors.
