-current as of 21 August built just fine (after nuking kernel .../compile/*
directories).  The resulting release installed without incident and boots
and runs properly.

It would appear that my apprehensions were unfounded (although I still
don't know why it didn't work at the time).  As my use of netbsd-8 was
a panicked fall-back when -current appeared not to work, I have no
objections to the proposed pull-up.
