Yes, older versions ( up to 1.4 or so ? ) used RARP, just try one of them. 
If your kernel is a.out it should work.
I found DHCP rather overcomplicated and would prefer the old method...
( Yes, I know the reasons for switching to DHCP, but old dogs and new 
tricks... )
