To answer my own questions (hpcarm is supposed to be a Tier 1 port...):

Touch panel and power management are not supported; the rest of the
built-in devices I tried seem to be usable (USB modem, 802.11 cards,
built-in MMC card reader).

X is usable too (with a pointer-less window manager).

With touch panel support this would be a very useful machine to me (and
they sell for USD 80-100 on E-bay these days).
