removing wireless and ethernet cards

When I remove my wireless or ethernet card from my Mobilepro 790, I  
see messages that the card has been removed.  But, then I also  
continue to get messages from network associated processes about not  
being able to find hosts, etc.  So, I usually reboot after removing  
or inserting a network card.  Do I have to reboot after removing or  
inserting a network card?  Can I issue a few commands to update the  
system and have it recognize the new state?
