Look at the boot messages. If you see something like: wd0 at atabus drive 0: <your cf disk model here> then your kernel does recognize your cf card. Hmmm... Now that I'm looking at my nada's dmesg, I see the wd0-related lines coming after wskbd-blah and before boot-device-blah, so you may actually have a problem with your CF, although rather improbable. I went straight for CURRENT (3.99.3 at the moment) on my 690 with great success[1]. You can grab a -current snapshot from releng.netbsd.org and start from there.
