I think it broke when the switch was made to ffs v2, but even before that, it required the entire installation to be within the first gigabyte on the disk. Note that the Traditional Method would still be useful, especially for slow systems such as SE/30 or if a SCSI CD-ROM drive can't be found, but it would require modifications to the Mac OS versions of Mkfs and the NetBSD Installer. Including it in the installation instructions could cause some users to waste time trying to use that method for installation. -Stan Johnson
