I noticed that GXemul claims that 8.x is usable in their MobilePro 
emulation: http://gavare.se/gxemul/gxemul-stable/doc/machine_hpcmips.html

Apparently real hardware behaves differently.
It seems there was quite some refactoring around softfloat support in 
the mips kernel between 7.2 and 8.0, so just comparing release versions 
is probably not going to cut it...
