MobilePro 780 Install (fwd)

I'm trying to install 9.2 on an old NEC MobilePro 780.

I can boot the install, configure the network and download sets from the FTP
site.  But extracting the .tgz sets fails with a variety of (apparently
inconsistent) error messages.  It seems this is a known problem.  Any ideas how
to proceed?
