Actually as a follow-up, what's the flow like for when xorg releases
the console?

it looks like it should be going newport_ioctl() via a
WSDISPLAYIO_SMODE (WSDISPLAYIO_MODE_EMUL) call to re-init the hardware
and redraw the screen? Does that sound right?

If that's the case then yeah, something isn't being fully reinitalised
for the XL8 cards :/
