Linux has a basic framebuffer driver for it that could be a good reference. I don't think the details of these chips was ever publicly shared, they were used on a few Diamond FireGL cards (before ATI). If you want an easier start, some of the 2d cards use common chipsets, for instance the GXT130P is a Matrox G200 and the GXT135P is a Matrox G450.
