2.0 miniroot vs diskimage?

Does anyone know what pmax/installation/miniroot is for? It looks like
it shouldn't be there at all, considering it's gzipped but with no gz
suffix on the name.

The installation doc doesn't mention it AFAICT.
pmax/installation/diskimage/diskimage.gz seems to be the right one to
use.
